SkyCity reopens Hamilton and Queenstown casinos amid deregulation

SkyCity Entertainment Group has announced that it will reopen its Hamilton and Queenstown casinos and entertainment facilities on Wednesday, September 8, after COVID-19 restrictions are eased.

The New Zealand government announced on September 6 that it would shift the COVID-19 alert level for countries other than Auckland to Level 2 from 11:59 PM on September 7th.

This will allow operators to reopen their Hamilton and Queenstown facilities, both of which will reopen “in a phased manner and with additional health and safety measures to reflect the latest recommendations from the Department of Health and guidance for operating at Alert Level 2” .

Larger SkyCity Queenstown venues will reopen, but smaller Wharf Casino venues will remain closed due to continuing border restrictions, which, according to SkyCity, will negatively impact local economies that rely heavily on tourism, according to SkyCity. SkyCity Auckland also remains closed due to Auckland’s Alert Level 4 status.

The operator added that SkyCity Adelaide and SkyCity Online Casino outside of New Zealand are not affected by the latest government announcements.

“SkyCity will provide additional updates as new material information becomes available,” the group said.
